Used Truck Value
Used
Truck Values & Black Book
Find out used truck value without looking at the
black book, tips on
buying used truck and how to choose the right truck based on your
need.
A slightly different than
Used Car Values, dealers use the truck book as a reference to
determine the used truck value.
If you are researching on
Car Trade-in Values, please refer to
Black Book Car Values page.
The Truck Book measures at 4 inches by 6 inches
and they
are updated MONTHLY. As an old cliché of car sales people:
Your truck
will never cost this high tomorrow, next week or next month than TODAY!
Just like the black book used trucks, SUVs and
Vans
(both mini vans and cargo vans) are also classified into four
categories: Extra Clean, Clean, Average and Rough.
These classifications are based on
Used Car Appraisal, they are not about how "shinny" the
vehicle is. Instead look at each category as a way to differentiate the
DEMAND or HOTNESS based on all the valuation variables that affect the
value of the vehicle.

Used Truck Value Variations
From a dealer's point of view, there are tons of
variables need to take into consideration when determining the value of
a truck. For a complete list of variables please
The options on the truck can literally ADD or
DEDUCT
thousands of dollars.
For example: 4 wheel drive Toyota pick up can add
$2,000
to $4,000 to its value. An extra cab or double cab will sold $3,000 to
$6,000 more than their counterparts on smaller ones.
The following are some of the important options to
look
for.
For Pick Up Trucks:
- 4WD VS 2WD
- 4 Cylinder VS V6
- Work Truck VS Pleasure Use
- Stick shift VS Automatic Transmission
For Mini Vans:
- Engine size (V6 mostly more desirable than 4
cylinders)
- Dual Zone A/C or Tri-zone A/C or simply the
Rear A/C
- Seats configuration: 60/40 split seats, Captain
Seats
VS bench seats.
For Sports Utility Vehicles:
- 2WD VS 4WD
- 3rd Row Seat Option
- Premium Alloy Wheels
- V6 VS V8 (V8 will mostly kills the value)
- Leather seats and Moon roof (more desirable)

Used Truck Value in the United States
A good starting point would be research truck
values
with
Nada Guides and
Edmunds Guide.
Write down their wholesale value, private party
value
and clean retail value on a piece of paper. Use those figures as a
guideline, a rough idea.
Go to
eBay Motors and do a search on Completed Listing Search to
find out how much is the similar truck sold for, that price should be
in between Wholesale Price and Private party price.
Make a trip to your local CarMax Store and let
them
offer you a cash price to buying the truck off your hand. That’s a
straight forward wholesale price.
If there is no CarMax store in your near town,
check
your local newspaper or yellow pages, see if there are any independent
dealers will buy used cars for cash.
You might also encounter ads like “we buy cars,
trucks
and SUVs of any kind, running or not CALL NOW 555-5555”, give them a
call and let them tell you your truck worth.
Those could be curbstoners who buy and sell cars
without
holding a dealer license. They might just offer you a higher than
dealer trade in value for your truck.
At this point you should have some idea about your
truck
value from the wholesale side. Check your local classified ad sites
such as
Craigslis
and AutoTrader website to find out how much
people
are asking for private party sale or dealer retail.

Final Thoughts on Used Trucks
Used truck values are very tricky, with so many
options
and add on to the vehicle even the dealers are extra careful in
appraisals.
If you are planning to own a used Toyota trucks,
be
prepared to pay an arm and leg for it! I have seen people asking $4,000
to $6,000 higher than black book for their Tacomas and 4Runners.
Consider older Nissan pick up trucks as an
alternative,
Nissan Pathfinder are more reasonable than Toyota 4runners, and they
are just as good. Domestic used trucks are always the cheapest to own.
Avoid buying big engine V8 or above, unless you
are
buying for work truck or you need X amount for towing or hauling some
toys. The resale values for those bigger ones are the worst.
Stay away from those trucks that are either
lowered or
being raised up, unless you are experienced 4x4 owners.
